Diving Reqqa Point
Reqqa Point is one of the best-known dive sites on the north coast of Gozo. The small headland lies west of the Xwejni salt pans and drops dramatically beneath the surface into a spectacular reef and wall environment.
The underwater landscape is characterised by limestone ledges, fissures, caves, large boulders and steep drop-offs. Depending on the route and the diver's qualification, the dive can range from relatively shallow reef sections to much deeper water beyond the main wall.
The Reqqa Reef
The shallower part of the reef provides an excellent introduction to the site. The underwater terrain contains gullies, cracks and boulders where marine life can be found. The reef drops away progressively, with deeper sections leading towards the dramatic wall.
More experienced divers can follow the wall towards deeper water. The northern coast provides exceptionally clear views when conditions are favourable, making the changing underwater depth and limestone formations particularly impressive.
Caves, chimneys and rock formations
Reqqa Point contains several smaller caves, overhangs and underwater chimneys. One of the distinctive features near the entry area is a chimney descending from the shallower reef into deeper water.
Large limestone boulders are another characteristic feature of the dive. These provide shelter for numerous species and create a varied route for divers returning towards the shallower reef.
Marine life
The reef and wall support a wide range of Mediterranean marine life. Depending on season, visibility and sea conditions, divers may encounter groupers, dentex, rays and barracuda in the open water.
Around the rocks and boulders, divers may also find moray eels, spiny lobsters, nudibranchs and shoals of smaller reef fish. The combination of clear water, dramatic limestone and abundant marine life makes Reqqa Point particularly attractive to underwater photographers.
Depth and dive planning
Reqqa Point offers several different dive profiles. The shallower reef is around 17 metres in places, while other routes descend to approximately 25 metres before reaching the deeper wall.
The wall continues to considerably greater depths, with published dive information placing the deeper underwater sections beyond 40 metres. These depths are beyond normal recreational limits and should only be considered by appropriately trained and qualified divers.
