The Rotunda of St John the Baptist
The parish church is one of Gozo's most spectacular buildings. Its enormous dome dominates the village and can be seen from a considerable distance. Inside, the scale of the church becomes even more apparent.
An ancient landscape
Archaeological evidence shows that the Xewkija area was inhabited in prehistoric times. Later Punic and Roman remains have also been identified, showing that the area remained useful for settlement and agriculture over many centuries.
The village and its history
Xewkija became a parish in 1678 as its population grew. The village subsequently developed into an important agricultural and residential community, while the Rotunda became its defining landmark.
